OUR MONTHLY GARDENING GUIDES

jOBS FOR JANUARY

January is the beginning of the gardening year and time for fresh starts. Now is a great time to plan for the year ahead and get everything ready for when the growing season begins.

Whether you’re giving your patch a good tidy, creating a seed sowing calendar or feeding our feathery friends, let’s brave the cold and get out into the garden to prepare yourself for when spring arrives!

TIME FOR A GOOD CLEAN

It may not be the most glamourous job but now is an ideal time to give your greenhouses, pots and containers a good clean before the growing season starts! Plants will live longer and look better if your pots are clean so get out into the garden and get scrubbing.

Plan for the year ahead

Now’s a great time to start planning what seeds you’re going to be sowing throughout the year! Create your own seed sowing calendar so you know when to sow your seeds and when to plant them out!

FORCE YOUR RHUBARB

You still have the chance to plant your rhubarb in January. You can force rhubarb plants by placing an upturned bucket or bin over the crown. This will force tender pink stems to grow that will be ready in about eight weeks time.

RECYCLE YOUR TREE

Whether you’re creating woodchip mulch, using it as a frame for your climbers or making a wildlife shelter, make the most of your cut Christmas tree after the festivities have ended. Remember, pot-grown Christmas trees can be planted outside in your garden!

Start pruning

Now is the time give your apple and pear trees, grape vines and wisteria their winter prune. After pruning, feed with a balanced fertiliser such as Westland’s Growmore Garden Fertiliser for the best results.
