Planting the perfect terrarium

Build your own terrarium using jam jars!

Terrariums are miniature contained gardens that help bring greenery to any indoor space! They’re easy to care for, look fantastic and are the perfect environment for growing your cacti, succulents and air plants!

Our team have taken on a little ‘upcycling’ challenge by creating beautiful mini terrariums using jam jars and coffee containers – they’re so easy to make but look so effective! So if you’re looking for a little weekend project, have a go yourself and see what you can create!

Here are our top tips for planting the perfect terrarium:

Step 1

Fill the bottom of your container with your chosen decorative aggregate to help with drainage. We’d always recommend a glass container to allow for light to flow in.

Step 2

Begin to fill your terrarium with sphagnum moss, which will help to contain water. Be sure to compact it down as much as possible, creating nice, equal layers.

Step 3

Now it’s time to add your potting mix. If planting Cacti and Succulents, we recommend using a cacti & succulent potting mix or a houseplant compost for any small plants!

Step 4

Plant up! Hannah recommends slow-growing plants such as cacti, succulents or mini plants which are less likely to outgrow the container.

Step 5

Finish off with more decorative toppers, stones or moss to give your plant a contemporary. Give your terrarium a water but be careful not to over water!

Step 6

And the last thing you need to do is enjoy them! They are perfect for an office space, a spacious bedroom or a light and airy kitchen!
