OUR MONTHLY Gardening GUIDES

Jobs for August

The temperatures are rising!

August is usually one of the hottest months of the year and traditionally a month we like to spend basking in the sunshine. It’s also a month we usually like to spend enjoying a well earned holiday so, when you are at home, our team at Tong have put together a few hints and tips to help you in the garden this month!

Water frequently

In the warm weather, it’s very important you check your plants on a daily basis and water them if the soil is dry. The team at Tong recommends watering early in the morning and late evening during the height of summer!

DON’T MOW TOO LOW

In hot, dry months keep your lawn looking green by allowing blades of grass to grow longer! Remember that cutting your lawn too short will create brown spots.

Cut back spent flowers

Deadhead regularly by removing dead flowers from your bedding plants as they fade – it keeps plants looking tidy and encourages new growth. Give your plants a quick pick-me-up with a liquid feed such as Miracle Gro All Purpose Liquid Feed.

PLANT SPRING FLOWERING BULBS

Our spring flowering bulbs will start arriving in store and the choice is wonderful. Whether itʼs tulips, daffodils or snowdrops, these wonders work their magic over winter to bring a colourful display. We recommend planting in bulb fibre to encourage fast root growth.

HARVEST YOUR CROPS

Many of the crops are ready to harvest during August so start picking your veg and encourage further fruiting. Beans, peas, courgettes and salad crops are at their peak and will quickly go over if not picked regularly so get harvesting!

TIME TO TAKE CUTTING

August is the best time to take cuttings from half-hardy bedding plants such as Fuchsias, Pelargoniums, Marguerites and Trailing Petunias. These plants will produce fresh, firm shoots that can removed with a pair of secateurs and readily root when put into damp compost.
