January in the Garden
Winter is here! January might be the middle of winter but it's now that the days start to get longer and your garden will start to grow.
This is a great time of year to plan for the year ahead, enjoy the fresh air and check your winter protection against any severe weather. Our team at Tong are happy to help and have put together a quick guide...
It's a good time to get ready for the year ahead so give the pots, trays and labels a good scrub and dust.
Although it might not be the most glamorous job cleaning out your greenhouse, gutters and water butts is an important one. By doing this now, you're giving your plants the best environment to grow in.
You still have the chance to plant our rhubarb in January. You can force rhubarb plants by placing an upturned bucket or bin over the crown. This will force tender pink stems to grow that will be ready in about eight weeks time.
Now is the time give your apple and pear trees, grape vines and wisteria their winter prune. After pruning, feed with a balanced granular fertiliser for the best results.
Remember to keep putting out food over the winter months to support local wildlife. Top your bird feeders and birdbaths to keep your hungry customers happy.
